Approach: The route approaches Kilimanjaro from the west, starting at the Londorossi Gate. This western approach is more remote and less crowded than the southern routes in the initial days.
Scenery: The Lemosho Route is arguably the most beautiful on the mountain, offering a diverse range of landscapes. You'll trek through lush rainforest, a unique moorland and heath zone with volcanic rock, alpine desert, and finally, the arctic zone of the summit. The initial two days offer a chance to spot wildlife like Colobus monkeys.
Acclimatization: The 7-day Lemosho itinerary is designed with the "climb high, sleep low" principle in mind, which is crucial for acclimatization. The route's longer, more gradual ascent helps your body adjust to the altitude, increasing your chances of reaching the summit.
Joining the Southern Circuit: After the initial days, the Lemosho Route merges with the Machame Route near the Lava Tower. From there, it follows the "Southern Circuit," which circles the mountain below the Kibo peak, offering spectacular views from various angles.
Descent: The descent from the summit is made via the Mweka Route, a direct path that takes you from the high camps down to the Mweka Gate.
Day 1: Lemosho Gate to Forest Camp / Big Tree Camp
Elevation: 7,800 ft / 2,385m to 9,500 ft / 2,780m
Distance: 6 km / 4 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest
The journey begins with a drive from your hotel to the Londorossi Gate, followed by a short drive to the trailhead. After registering, you'll start your trek through the dense, pristine rainforest. The path is often muddy and can be steep in sections. You'll arrive at Forest Camp in the afternoon.
Day 2: Forest Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Elevation: 9,500 ft / 2,780m to 11,500 ft / 3,500m
Distance: 8 km / 5 miles
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
You'll leave the rainforest behind and enter a savannah of tall grasses and heather. As you ascend, the views of the Shira Ridge and Kibo Peak will begin to open up. You'll cross a plateau to reach Shira 1 Camp.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Moir Hut / Shira 2 Camp
Elevation: 11,500 ft / 3,500m to 13,800 ft / 4,200m
Distance: 14 km / 9 miles
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Moorland/Alpine Desert
This day involves exploring the Shira Plateau. You'll continue east across the plateau, with panoramic views, and then ascend to Moir Hut, a quieter camp. This is a crucial day for acclimatization.
Day 4: Moir Hut / Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp (via Lava Tower)
Elevation: 13,800 ft / 4,200m to 13,000 ft / 3,960m
Distance: 7 km / 4 miles
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
This day is a prime example of "climb high, sleep low." You'll ascend to the base of Lava Tower (15,250ft/4,640m), a prominent volcanic rock formation. After a break for lunch, you'll descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley, which is famous for its giant groundsels and lobelias. You end the day at a lower elevation than your highest point, which is excellent for acclimatization.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation: 13,000 ft / 3,960m to 15,300 ft / 4,640m
Distance: 9 km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: 8-10 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The day begins with a thrilling, non-technical climb up the famous Barranco Wall. From the top, you'll have stunning views of the surrounding area. You'll then trek through a series of inclines and declines to the Karanga Valley before continuing your final ascent to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Elevation: 15,300 ft / 4,640m to 19,341 ft / 5,895m (and down to 10,000 ft / 3,080m)
Distance: 5 km / 3 miles ascent, 12 km / 7 miles descent
Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent, 4-6 hours descent
Habitat: Arctic, Alpine Desert, and Rain Forest
The most challenging and rewarding day of the trek. You'll begin your summit bid around midnight, climbing through the cold and darkness. You'll reach the crater rim at Stella Point (18,815 ft / 5,735m) around sunrise. From there, it's a final push to Uhuru Peak, the summit of Kilimanjaro. After celebrating, you'll begin the long descent back to Barafu for a short rest before continuing all the way down to Mweka Camp.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Elevation: 10,000 ft / 3,080m to 5,400 ft / 1,640m
Distance: 10 km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest
After breakfast and a final ceremony with your climbing crew, you'll descend the rest of the way through the forest to Mweka Gate. At the gate, you'll receive your summit certificates. A vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel for a well-deserved shower and celebration.
