Approach: The Machame Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the south, starting at the Machame Gate.
Scenery: It's famous for its beauty, taking you through five distinct climatic zones: the lush rainforest, the moorland and heath zone, alpine desert, and finally, the arctic zone at the summit.
Difficulty: The route is considered more challenging than the Marangu route due to steeper trails and the "climb high, sleep low" profile. The most notable challenge is the Barranco Wall, a non-technical scramble that requires using your hands for balance and a bit of a thrill.
Acclimatization: The Machame Route is excellent for acclimatization, especially the 7-day itinerary. A key part of the trek is the "climb high, sleep low" strategy, which is perfectly executed on Day 4 when you ascend to a high elevation at Lava Tower before descending to a lower one at Barranco Camp to sleep. This helps your body adapt to the altitude, significantly increasing your chances of reaching the summit.
Southern Circuit: After ascending the Barranco Wall, the route joins the Southern Circuit, which traverses the mountain beneath the Southern Ice Field, offering breathtaking views from various angles.
Descent: The descent from the summit is a direct path down the Mweka Route.
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Elevation: 5,905 ft / 1,800m to 9,840 ft / 3,000m
Distance: 11 km / 7 miles
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest
The trek begins at Machame Gate. You'll hike through dense, tropical rainforest, where you may spot some wildlife like Black-and-White Colobus monkeys. The trail can be muddy and steep in sections. You'll camp for the night at Machame Camp.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Elevation: 9,840 ft / 3,000m to 12,600 ft / 3,840m
Distance: 5 km / 3 miles
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
You'll leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone. The path becomes steeper, leading you out of the forest canopy and onto a rocky ridge. You'll get your first views of Kibo (Kilimanjaro's peak) as you make your way to Shira 2 Camp, located on the Shira Plateau.
Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Elevation: 12,600 ft / 3,840m to 15,190 ft / 4,630m to 13,040 ft / 3,975m
Distance: 10 km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
This is a crucial acclimatization day, following the "climb high, sleep low" principle. You'll ascend to Lava Tower, a volcanic rock formation, where you'll have lunch. This high altitude exposure helps your body adjust to the thin air. Afterward, you'll descend into the Barranco Valley, ending the day at a lower elevation than your high point. Barranco Camp is considered one of the most beautiful camps on the mountain.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Elevation: 13,040 ft / 3,975m to 13,100 ft / 3,995m
Distance: 5 km / 3 miles
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The day starts with the famous Barranco Wall. This is a steep scramble, but not technical climbing. Your guides will assist you, and it's a fun and rewarding challenge. From the top of the wall, you'll hike up and down through a series of valleys to reach Karanga Camp. This shorter hiking day is great for further acclimatization.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation: 13,100 ft / 3,995m to 15,330 ft / 4,673m
Distance: 4 km / 2.5 miles
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
You'll continue your trek to Barafu Camp, the final base camp before your summit bid. The terrain becomes more barren and rocky as you ascend. You'll arrive in the afternoon, have an early dinner, and prepare for the summit attempt, which will begin around midnight.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Elevation: 15,330 ft / 4,673m to 19,341 ft / 5,895m (and down to 10,065 ft / 3,068m)
Distance: 5 km / 3 miles ascent, 12 km / 7.5 miles descent
Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent, 4-6 hours descent
Habitat: Arctic, Alpine Desert, and Rain Forest
The most challenging day of the climb. You'll begin your ascent in the early morning darkness, trekking slowly through the cold. You'll reach Stella Point on the crater rim around sunrise and then continue for about another hour to Uhuru Peak. After celebrating, you'll descend back to Barafu for a brief rest before continuing all the way down to Mweka Camp.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Elevation: 10,065 ft / 3,068m to 5,380 ft / 1,640m
Distance: 10 km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest
The final day is a gentle descent through the rainforest. You'll make your way to Mweka Gate, where you'll receive your summit certificates. A vehicle will be waiting to take you back to your hotel for a much-needed rest and celebration.
