DAY TRIP - COFFE TOUR

A coffee day tour is a unique and immersive cultural experience that complements a traditional safari, allowing you to connect with the local people and learn about one of Tanzania's most important cash crops. These tours are most commonly offered in the villages on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru, such as Materuni and Ambureni, which have the perfect climate and volcanic soil for coffee cultivation.

Understanding the Process: You'll learn about the entire coffee production process, from how the coffee plant is grown and harvested to the final brewing.

Active Participation: You get to be part of the action. You'll hand-pick ripe coffee cherries from the bushes, peel the outer skin, and learn how the beans are dried.

Traditional Roasting and Grinding: A major highlight is participating in the traditional method of roasting the dried beans over a fire. Afterward, you'll use a wooden mortar and pestle to grind the beans into a fine powder, often accompanied by the rhythmic singing and dancing of the local villagers.

Freshly Brewed Coffee: The reward for your hard work is a cup of the freshest coffee you've ever tasted, brewed from the beans you just processed yourself.

Cultural Immersion: The tour often includes a visit to the local village, offering insights into the daily life and traditions of the Chagga people. Many tours also include a traditional lunch, such as a banana stew, and the opportunity to try local banana beer.

08:00 AM: Pick-up from your hotel in Arusha. Your private vehicle and guide will begin the drive to Materuni Village, located on the lush slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The drive itself is scenic, offering views of the Tanzanian countryside.

09:30 AM: Upon arrival at the village, you'll be welcomed by a local guide. You'll begin a guided walk through the village, learning about the daily life and traditions of the Chagga tribe. The walk takes you through the verdant landscape, passing by coffee and banana plantations.

10:30 AM: You'll arrive at the stunning Materuni Waterfalls. The waterfall, which is over 80 meters high, cascades into a natural pool below. You'll have time to relax, take photos, and even take a refreshing swim in the cool, clear water.

12:00 PM: You'll hike back to the village for a traditional hot lunch. This is a chance to taste authentic Chagga cuisine, often a delicious banana stew, and to sit down with your hosts. You might also get a chance to taste the local banana beer, known as mbege.

01:30 PM: The main event begins. Your guide will take you through the entire coffee production process. You will actively participate in:
Picking: Selecting ripe red coffee cherries from the plants.
Pulping: Using a hand-powered machine to remove the outer skin of the coffee cherry.
Grinding: Traditionally using a wooden mortar and pestle to grind the dried beans into a fine powder, often accompanied by rhythmic singing and dancing.
Roasting: Watching and helping as the beans are roasted over a fire, filling the air with a rich, inviting aroma.

03:30 PM: The grand finale. You get to enjoy a cup of coffee that you helped create from scratch.

04:30 PM: Your driver will begin the journey back to your hotel in Arusha, concluding the tour.
