Accommodation: Instead of public campsites, you will stay in comfortable mid-range lodges or permanent tented camps. These accommodations provide spacious rooms or tents, private en-suite bathrooms with hot showers and flush toilets, and often have amenities like a restaurant, bar, and sometimes a swimming pool. They are typically located either in scenic areas just outside the parks or within the park boundaries for a more immersive experience.
Transportation: Travel is in a private, well-maintained 4x4 safari vehicle (like a Toyota Land Cruiser). You will have your own expert driver-guide who is highly knowledgeable about the wildlife, the parks, and the local culture. The vehicle is equipped with a pop-up roof for excellent game viewing and photography, and may include a small fridge for cold drinks.
Cost: A 5-day mid-range safari for two people can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $2,500 per person, depending on the season, the specific lodges chosen, and the number of people in your group. This price typically includes all park fees, accommodations, all meals, bottled water, the private vehicle, and the services of a professional guide.
Meals: You'll enjoy a higher standard of food. A typical day includes a full breakfast at the lodge, a packed picnic lunch to be enjoyed at a scenic spot in the bush, and a multi-course dinner back at the lodge or camp.
Flexibility: Mid-range safaris offer more flexibility than budget tours. You can often customize your itinerary to a greater extent and decide how long to spend at each sighting, without the constraints of a larger group.
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park
Your adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Arusha. You'll drive to Tarangire National Park, famous for its ancient baobab trees and vast elephant herds. Upon arrival, you'll embark on a game drive, enjoying a picnic lunch inside the park. In the late afternoon, you'll drive to your mid-range lodge or tented camp located near the park for a relaxing evening, dinner, and overnight stay.
Day 2: Tarangire to Serengeti National Park
After breakfast, you'll begin the scenic drive to the Serengeti. The journey itself is a safari, as you'll travel through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with opportunities to see wildlife along the way. You will arrive at the Serengeti's central Seronera area, known for its permanent game viewing due to the Seronera River. After checking into your tented camp, you will head out for an afternoon game drive. Dinner and overnight will be at your camp, with the sounds of the African bush all around you.
Day 3: Full Day in the Serengeti
This day is dedicated to exploring the vast and iconic Serengeti. Your guide will take you on a full-day game drive, focusing on areas with high concentrations of wildlife. You will have a chance to spot the "Big Five" and witness the spectacular landscapes of the plains. Depending on the season, you may follow the path of the Great Wildebeest Migration. You'll enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush, making the most of your time in this world-famous park. You will return to your tented camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater
After a final morning game drive in the Serengeti, you will drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The drive takes you up the highlands to the crater rim, offering breathtaking panoramic views. You will spend the night at a mid-range lodge in the Karatu area or on the crater rim itself. This offers a different environment from the plains and prepares you for the next day's descent.
Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater Tour & Return to Arusha
After an early breakfast, you'll descend into the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive on the crater floor. This enclosed ecosystem is home to an incredible density of wildlife, including the rare black rhino. You will spend the morning exploring this natural wonder, stopping for a picnic lunch near a hippo pool. In the afternoon, you will ascend the crater wall and begin the drive back to Arusha, marking the end of your safari. You will be dropped off at your hotel or the airport for your onward flight.
